Capsule wardrobe guide for women

Build a 40 to 60 piece women's capsule wardrobe in India: the pieces, the outfit formulas, the budget and the shopping order, by climate.

Updated 10 Oct 2026

A capsule wardrobe is not about owning less for the sake of it. It is about owning pieces that make many outfits. For women, the outfit is the unit. You count outfits, not items. A good capsule of 40 to 60 pieces, across work, weekend, festive and travel, can make over a hundred looks. Here is the list, the formulas and the order to buy.

How a capsule works

Pick a palette of three base colours, two accent colours and one metal. Everything you buy goes with at least four other things. Silhouette repeats too. If you love a wide leg, buy three wide-leg pieces in different colours and fabrics. Count what you wear, not what you own. If you have not worn it in a year, it does not belong in the capsule.

  • Base colours: three that work with your skin, such as navy, cream and olive.
  • Accent colours: two that make your face brighter, such as coral and teal.
  • Metal: gold or silver, not both. It decides your jewellery.
  • Rule of five: every new piece must go with five things you own.

The 40 to 60 piece list

Split the wardrobe into four families. Work, weekend, festive and travel. Each family has a core of pieces that overlap. Aim for the numbers below and adjust for your life.

  • Tops, 14 to 18: tees, shirts, blouses, two knit tops, two ethnic kurtas.
  • Bottoms, 8 to 10: two jeans, two trousers, one skirt, two palazzos or straight pants, one leggings.
  • Dresses and sarees, 6 to 8: two day dresses, one evening dress, three sarees or lehenga skirts.
  • Layers, 5 to 6: a blazer, a denim jacket, a cardigan, a shawl or stole, a light coat.
  • Shoes, 6 to 8: sneakers, flats, block heels, sandals, juttis, boots.
  • Bags and accessories, 8 to 10: a tote, a crossbody, a clutch, a belt, scarves, jewellery sets.

Outfit formulas at three budgets

Each formula shows how a small buy makes many outfits. The pieces are the starter set.

Starter capsule, 20 pieces

  • White shirt, about ₹900 (Uniqlo sale or H&M)
  • Straight jeans, about ₹1,500 (Only or Vero Moda)
  • Cotton kurta in a base colour, about ₹1,200 (Fabindia)
  • Footwear: white sneakers, about ₹1,800
  • Accessory: gold hoops, about ₹300

Budget under ₹2,000 per piece

These five pieces make about 12 outfits with a scarf and a jacket.

Core capsule, 40 pieces

  • Tailored blazer in navy or beige, about ₹3,500 (Zara or Mango)
  • Wide-leg trousers, about ₹2,500 (Mango or AND)
  • Silk-blend saree in a jewel tone, about ₹4,500 (Fabindia)
  • Footwear: block-heel loafers, about ₹3,000
  • Accessory: leather tote, about ₹3,500 (Zara)

Budget ₹2,000 to ₹6,000 per piece

The blazer works with the trousers, jeans, a dress and a saree.

Full capsule, 60 pieces

  • Handloom saree, about ₹8,000 (Fabindia, Ajio weavers)
  • Wool coat, about ₹9,000 (Marks & Spencer or Zara)
  • Leather ankle boots, about ₹6,500
  • Footwear: leather loafers, about ₹6,000
  • Accessory: a quality leather bag, about ₹8,000

Budget ₹6,000 to ₹15,000 per piece

Spend more on pieces you wear weekly. They cost less per wear.

Shopping order

Buy in this order. First, bottoms that fit, since they are hardest to find. Second, a base layer of shirts and tees. Third, layers such as a blazer and cardigan. Fourth, shoes and a bag. Last, accessories and festive pieces. Do not buy a festive outfit before you own five everyday outfits.

  • Week one: three bottoms.
  • Week two: five tops.
  • Week three: two layers and one pair of shoes.
  • Week four: one festive piece and one dress.

Climate note

In Delhi and the north, add wool, boots and a coat. In Mumbai, Chennai and Kerala, use cotton, linen and viscose, and skip heavy layers. In Bangalore and Pune, pick light layers all year. In monsoon, add quick-dry pieces and rubber footwear. Keep one set of pieces for each climate you meet in a year.

Colour and silhouette in a capsule

Colour decides how many outfits you can make. Choose three base colours that sit well near your face. Warm skin tones: cream, olive, camel, rust. Cool skin tones: navy, grey, rose, plum. Neutral: charcoal, teal, soft white. Silhouette repeats. If you are petite, choose a high waist and a short jacket. If you are tall, choose a longer coat and wide legs. Keep one oversized piece, one fitted piece and one flowing piece in each outfit. That is proportion.

What to stop buying for a capsule

Stop buying one-off statement pieces that match nothing. Stop buying a third pair of black trousers. Stop buying "sale" clothes in colours you do not wear. Stop buying fast-fashion basics that lose shape after three washes. Buy fewer, better basics.

Questions

How many clothes should be in a capsule wardrobe?

For women who dress for work, weekend and festive, 40 to 60 pieces is a good range. Count tops, bottoms, dresses, layers and shoes.

How do I start a capsule wardrobe in India?

Pick a palette, list what you wear each week, and remove what you have not worn in a year. Then buy missing basics first.

Can a capsule wardrobe include sarees and kurtas?

Yes. Include two or three sarees, four kurtas and a lehenga skirt. They make festive looks without extra purchases.

How much does a capsule wardrobe cost?

A starter capsule costs between ₹20,000 and ₹40,000 if you buy over time. Mix budget and mid-range pieces.
