Christmas outfit ideas for women

Christmas outfits for women in India: church, lunch, party and office looks at three budgets, with brands, prices, colours and winter notes.

Updated 10 Oct 2026

Christmas in India means church in the morning, a long family lunch, and perhaps a party at night. That is three outfits. Red and green are the obvious colours, but they are not the only ones. Here are looks at three budgets, with shoes and one accessory each.

Colours beyond red and green

Red is bold and green is rich, but you can also wear burgundy, forest green, cream, gold, navy and emerald. Pick the one that sits well near your face. Warm skin tones look good in rust, olive and tomato red. Cool skin tones look good in cranberry, deep green and royal blue. Neutral skin tones can wear almost any of them. Add metallics in jewellery rather than the outfit, so you stay elegant.

  • Church: a knee-length or midi dress in a deep colour, with sleeves or a cardigan.
  • Lunch: a comfortable dress or co-ord that handles seated meals.
  • Party: velvet, satin or sequins in a jewel tone.
  • Office Christmas day: a red top with black trousers is enough.

Outfit formulas

Each has shoes and one accessory.

Office or church, easy

  • Red or green fit-and-flare midi dress, about ₹1,800 (H&M sale, Vero Moda or Only)
  • Cardigan in cream, about ₹600
  • Footwear: ballet flats, about ₹900 (Ajio)
  • Accessory: pearl studs, about ₹300

Budget under ₹2,000

A dress in a rich colour carries the whole look.

Family lunch

  • Wrap midi dress in forest green or burgundy, about ₹3,500 (Zara or Mango)
  • Tan belt, about ₹800
  • Footwear: block-heel ankle boots, about ₹2,500
  • Accessory: gold hoops, about ₹700

Budget ₹2,000 to ₹6,000

A wrap shape adjusts to a big lunch and still looks smart.

Party, satin

  • Satin slip dress in emerald or wine, about ₹3,800 (H&M or AND)
  • Cropped blazer or shrug, about ₹2,000
  • Footwear: strappy heels, about ₹1,800
  • Accessory: statement drop earrings, about ₹900

Budget ₹2,000 to ₹6,000

A slip dress with a cropped jacket looks good in cool evenings.

Party, velvet

  • Velvet midi dress in deep red, about ₹7,500 (Zara, Mango or Marks & Spencer)
  • Faux-fur stole, about ₹1,800
  • Footwear: block heel pumps, about ₹3,000
  • Accessory: a small clutch with a chain, about ₹2,500

Budget ₹6,000 to ₹15,000

Velvet looks rich in candle light and works well in north India.

Silhouette and colour that photograph well

Christmas photos are warm and often indoors. Rich colours look good in that light. The silhouette depends on the event. A wrap dress is the most forgiving shape for a lunch, because it adjusts to the waist and moves well. A fit-and-flare gives a clear waist and a swing. A slip dress with a blazer gives a long vertical line. If you are tall, you can wear a long midi or maxi. If you are petite, keep hems at the knee or just below. Colour goes next to the face. Pick red if your skin is warm or deep. Try cranberry or berry if your skin has cool tones.

  • Add a belt to define the waist on any dress.
  • Wear tights in sheer black or skin tone for winter lunches.
  • Keep one colour as the star and the rest neutral.
  • Carry a pashmina for church.

Ethnic for Christmas

Many Indian families dress in ethnic wear for Christmas, especially in Goa, Kerala and the north-east. A Kerala-style white saree with a green border, a red silk anarkali, or a green kurta set with gold work are all lovely. Add a poinsettia pin or a red bindi. Keep to one festive colour.

Jewellery and hair

One-line note: gold hoops, a thin necklace and a sleek ponytail or loose waves. Red lipstick is the best accessory.

Climate note

North India in December is cold. Wear velvet, wool or layers, and carry a coat. Goa and Kerala are warm. Pick a cotton dress or light satin. In Bangalore and Hyderabad, the evenings are cool. Add a blazer.

What to stop buying for Christmas

Stop buying a novelty sweater you will wear once. Stop buying very short, thin dresses for chilly nights. Stop buying red head to toe. Break it up with neutral shoes and a bag.
