Durga Puja outfit ideas for women

What to wear for each day of Durga Puja: sarees, Sindoor Khela whites and reds, pandal hopping comfort, brands and prices at three budgets.

Updated 10 Oct 2026

Pujo is five days of colour, food and walking. You will see friends, visit pandals and stay out late. The outfit has to look good in photos and survive crowds. Here are the looks by day, in traditional and easy fusion options.

Day by day

Shashthi is the arrival, often soft and light. Saptami is the first big day. Ashtami is the most dressed up, with the anjali in the morning, so many women wear a red-bordered white saree or a yellow one. Navami is the dance and food day. Dashami brings the Sindoor Khela, with white and red.

  • Shashthi: pastel cotton saree or a pastel kurta set.
  • Saptami: a bright tant or cotton silk saree in a colour that is not red.
  • Ashtami: a traditional red and white or yellow, with fresh flowers.
  • Navami: something you can walk and dance in. Fusion works here.
  • Dashami: a white saree with red border, or a red and white set, plus shakha-pola.

Silhouette and colour for Pujo

A saree is the natural Pujo silhouette. The long vertical line of the pallu, with a border that frames your face, suits almost everyone. The border carries the colour. If you prefer a kurta set, choose a longer kurta with straight trousers. It reads polished and walks well. Red and white is the classic pair. If you want something different, try yellow with a green border, or a soft pink with gold. Colour near the face matters most. Warm skin tones look lovely in yellow, red and orange. Cool skin tones look lovely in magenta, wine and royal blue. White needs a strong border to avoid looking flat.

  • Pick a border colour that repeats in your bindi or flowers.
  • Carry a dupatta that doubles as a rain cover.
  • Starch tant sarees lightly. They look crisp for photos.

Packing the five days

You do not need five new sarees. Think in pairs. Take two sarees, one kurta set and one fusion outfit. Change blouses, dupattas and jewellery between days. Keep one outfit clean for Dashami, because Sindoor Khela leaves marks. If you travel to Kolkata for Pujo, pack in a soft bag and iron on arrival. Many hotels offer a quick press for a small fee.

  • Two sarees: one soft pastel, one bold with a border.
  • One kurta set for long walking days.
  • Three blouses in neutral colours that go with both sarees.
  • A cotton stole for rain and for temple covering.

Looks to copy

Tant sarees are the Bengali classic. They are light and starch well. Modern drapes with a belt and a crisp blouse suit a pandal crowd.

Ashtami anjali

  • Tant cotton saree in white and red, about ₹1,500 (Fabindia or local Kolkata labels on Ajio)
  • Contrast cotton blouse, about ₹500
  • Footwear: flat kolhapuris, about ₹700
  • Accessory: gold-tone bangles and a red bindi, about ₹250

Budget under ₹2,000

Classic and easy to repeat on Dashami.

Pandal hopping

  • Cotton kurta in a bright colour, about ₹1,800 (Biba or Libas)
  • Palazzo or straight pants in a neutral, about ₹1,200
  • Footwear: cushioned flats or sneakers, about ₹2,000 (Ajio)
  • Accessory: a crossbody bag, about ₹1,200 (Ajio)

Budget ₹2,000 to ₹6,000

You walk many kilometres. Comfort beats everything.

Evening Navami

  • Handloom Baluchari or Dhakai jamdani saree, about ₹7,500 (Fabindia, Ajio premium weavers)
  • Silk blouse, about ₹2,000
  • Footwear: low block heels, about ₹2,500
  • Accessory: statement gold-tone earrings, about ₹2,000

Budget ₹6,000 to ₹15,000

A handloom saree is an investment you will wear again.

Sindoor Khela

Wear white with a red border, or red and white together. Choose a saree you do not mind staining. Vermilion does not wash out of silk. Pick cotton. Take a spare dupatta or towel. Keep jewellery light.

Jewellery and hair

One-line note: shakha-pola in white and red, fresh jasmine or a rose in a bun, and a large red bindi tie together every look.

Climate note

Pujo falls in September or October. Kolkata is humid and may be rainy. Wear cotton and keep one umbrella and a spare dupatta. Do not carry heavy silk to pandal hopping.

What to stop buying for Puja

Stop buying five new sarees for five days. Buy two good ones and one set for Sindoor Khela. Stop buying slippery footwear for wet roads. Stop buying dark velvet. You will cook in it.
