Holi outfit ideas for women

What to wear to play Holi and to celebrate after it: white outfits, fabrics that survive colour, hair and skin prep, brands and prices.

Updated 10 Oct 2026

White is the Holi classic for a reason: the colours show up. But white that you cannot see through is the whole trick. Here is how to dress for the colour fight and for the party after it, at three budgets.

The rules

Wear clothes you are ready to lose. Wear cotton, which dries fast and does not cling. Choose a thick white or off-white, not thin. Wear dark inner layers or a sports bra. Do not wear silk, chiffon or anything dry-clean only. Wear shorts or leggings under a long kurta if you want to run around.

  • Old white kurta plus pants is the standard.
  • Choose loose fabric. Tight clothes get uncomfortable when wet.
  • Carry a second set to change into, in a plastic bag.

Silhouette and colour on Holi day

On Holi, the colour is the guest, so your outfit is the canvas. Keep the silhouette clean and loose. A long kurta with straight pants gives coverage and a neat line. A tunic with leggings keeps you cool. If you want the party look, a white co-ord set with a crop top and wide trousers works and photographs well. For colour, white and off-white are the base. If you want a pop, add a single bright dupatta or bandana. Pink, yellow and green show best on white. Cream or ivory adds warmth if stark white looks harsh on you.

  • Cream or ivory often looks softer near pale skin than stark white.
  • Use a bright scarf as your single colour pop.
  • Keep shoes dark so stains do not show.

The morning-to-evening plan

Holi is a long day. Plan it in three parts. In the morning, wear your old white set and play. At noon, shower, oil your skin and change into something clean and light for lunch. In the evening, wear something a little dressed up if there is a party. Pack the three outfits the night before. Put the dirty set in a bag that seals. Keep a towel and a change of underwear in the car. It sounds small, but it saves the day.

  • Wear your play outfit once, then retire it.
  • Pick a lunch outfit in pastel to match the season.
  • Keep a pair of sandals you can wash.

Three looks for different Holi styles.

  • Footwear: tan juttis, about ₹1,500
  • Accessory: silver jhumkas, about ₹1,200

Budget ₹6,000 to ₹15,000

Your clean outfit for the family meal afterwards.

Protect your hair and skin

Oil your hair and skin before you go out. Use coconut oil or a thick moisturiser. Put on sunscreen. Cover nails with a dark polish. Tie hair in a tight braid or a bun under a cap. Avoid contact lenses. After play, wash with a mild shampoo and do not scrub. Use a cold compress on red patches.

Jewellery and hair

One-line note: wear no jewellery you love, and put small studs or nothing at all. Braid your hair tight and use a scrunchie, not a clip that can break.

Climate note

Holi comes in March, when most of north India is warm and dry. Wet cotton dries in an hour. In the evening it can be cool, so carry a dry kurta or a light shawl for the walk home.

What to stop buying for Holi

Stop buying a new white outfit every year. Reuse last year's white kurta. Stop buying thin white cotton that turns transparent when wet. Stop buying fancy sandals. Stop buying silk, even if it looks pretty.

Questions

Why do people wear white on Holi?

White makes colours show clearly. It is also a tradition for spring. Choose thick cotton to avoid transparency.

How do I remove Holi colour from clothes?

Soak clothes in cold water first, then wash with mild detergent. Do not use hot water. It sets some dyes.

What should I wear under a white outfit on Holi?

Wear a dark or skin-toned inner layer and shorts or leggings. White cotton can become see-through when wet.

Can I wear jeans to play Holi?

Yes, but jeans stay heavy and cold when wet. Cotton pants are lighter. Wear old ones either way.
