Office wear guide for men

What to wear to an Indian office: dress codes decoded, summer formals, shoes, and three budget outfits with real brands and prices.

Updated 10 Oct 2026

Indian offices run on three dress codes: formal, business casual, and "whatever is clean." Most men guess wrong in the first month. This guide decodes each code. It gives you a small work wardrobe that survives heat, AC, and a surprise client meeting. Buy the shirt and the shoes first. Those two items do most of the work.

Decode the dress code

Formal means a shirt, trousers, leather shoes, and often a blazer for meetings. Business casual means a shirt or polo, chinos, and clean sneakers or loafers. Startup casual means a plain tee or shirt, dark jeans, and clean shoes. Look at what the most senior man wears on a normal Tuesday. Dress one step above that. Dress by the client, not by the office. If a client visits, move up one level for the day.

  • Formal: shirt, trousers, leather shoes, optional blazer.
  • Business casual: oxford shirt or polo, chinos, loafers or clean sneakers.
  • Startup casual: plain tee or shirt, dark jeans, white sneakers.

Surviving summer in formals

Cotton shirts beat polyester ones. Light blue and white reflect heat and hide sweat better than dark colours. Linen-blend and poplin shirts breathe. Carry one spare shirt if your commute is long. Skip the full suit from April to September. A shirt, a pressed trouser, and a blazer you keep on your chair is enough. Take your belt and shoe in one matching colour so you can dress fast.

  • Choose cotton poplin or linen blend. Skip stiff polyester.
  • Wear a plain white vest under pale shirts so sweat does not show.
  • Keep a blazer at the office for AC and meetings.

Three work outfits by budget

Each look below is a full outfit, shirt to shoes. They use brands you can buy on Myntra or Ajio. Prices are approximate.

Everyday formal, tight budget

  • Peter England or Van Heusen shirt, about ₹1,100
  • Peter England or Allen Solly trousers, about ₹1,300
  • Black or brown belt and slip-ons

Budget under 1,500 for the shirt and trouser if bought on sale

Plain colours and a fitted cut. These brands are made for Indian bodies and Indian offices.

Business casual, mid range

  • Van Heusen or Uniqlo oxford shirt, about ₹1,800
  • Zara or H&M chinos, about ₹2,000
  • Woodland or Bata leather loafers, about ₹3,500

Budget 1,500 to 4,000 for the shirt and trouser; shoes extra

A step up in fabric. The chinos and loafers also work on weekends.

Client-ready, upper range

  • Louis Philippe shirt, about ₹2,500
  • Louis Philippe or Rare Rabbit blazer, about ₹7,000
  • Wool-blend trousers, about ₹3,000

Budget 4,000 to 10,000 for the blazer and trouser

One good blazer covers the whole year of meetings. Choose navy or charcoal.

  • Iron every shirt. A wrinkled Rare Rabbit looks worse than a pressed Peter England.
  • Get trousers hemmed once. Hemming costs about ₹150 and fixes the fit.

Shoes that last

Own two leather pairs: one black Oxford or derby, one brown loafer. Polish them every week. Rotate them so each rests a day. Clean white leather sneakers are fine in business casual offices. Check this on your first week. Skip chunky sneakers and formal shoes with square toes.

How to make shirts and trousers fit

Fit is the real difference between a good and an average office look. The shirt collar should allow one finger between the neck and the collar. The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder. The shirt should skim your body without pulling at the buttons. Tuck it in cleanly, and the hem should reach the lower half of your trouser pocket. Trousers should sit at the natural waist and break lightly on the shoe. If a shirt is too big, ask a tailor to take in the sides for about ₹200. If a trouser is too long, hem it. These two small changes make a ₹1,200 shirt look like a ₹4,000 one. Check your fit in good light before you leave home.

What to stop buying

Stop buying shirts with loud checks and contrast cuffs. Stop buying shiny polyester trousers. Stop buying cheap belts with large logos. Buy one extra plain shirt instead.

  • Keep the watch simple: steel or leather, no huge dial.

Grooming in one line

Trim your beard, keep your nails short, and use a deodorant that lasts through a Mumbai local or a Bangalore traffic jam.
