Thailand packing guide for men

What men should pack for Thailand: temples, Bangkok, beaches and nightlife, a packing list by trip length, and three budgets with real brands.

Updated 10 Oct 2026

Thailand is hot, wet, and easy to dress for if you plan three things. Light fabrics for the heat. Covered knees and shoulders for temples. One smart outfit for a rooftop bar. You will walk, take tuk-tuks, and swim in the same day. Pack quick-dry clothes and slip-on shoes. This guide covers temple rules, beach and city outfits, a packing list by trip length, and three budget looks with real brands.

Temple rules

Temples are strict. Cover your shoulders and knees. Wear a shirt with sleeves and long trousers. Do not wear ripped jeans or sleeveless tops. Remove your shoes before you enter a hall. Slip-on shoes save time. The Grand Palace in Bangkok turns away people in shorts. Carry a lightweight scarf or sarong for emergencies. Do not touch monks or point your feet at a Buddha statue.

  • Shirt with sleeves, long trousers, slip-on shoes.
  • No shorts, no tank tops, no ripped jeans at the Grand Palace.
  • Carry a lightweight scarf as a backup cover.

Climate note

Thailand is hot all year, 28 to 35 degrees. November to February is cooler and drier, the best time to visit. March to May is very hot. June to October brings monsoon showers, mostly in the afternoon. The islands on the Andaman side, such as Phuket and Krabi, get the heaviest rain in this period. Humidity is high. Choose cotton and linen, and carry a small umbrella. Wear a cap and sunscreen.

Packing list by trip length

Laundry in Thailand is cheap and quick. A small bag is enough. Wear the heaviest items on the plane. Leave room for shopping, since Bangkok markets are a good place for tees and shirts.

  • 5 days: 4 tees, 2 shirts, 2 shorts, 1 long trouser, 2 swim shorts, sandals, sneakers.
  • 7 days: 5 tees, 3 shirts, 3 shorts, 2 long trousers, 2 swim shorts, sandals, sneakers.
  • 10 days: 6 tees, 4 shirts, 3 shorts, 2 long trousers, 2 swim shorts, light rain jacket, sandals, sneakers.
  • All trips: sunscreen, cap, sunglasses, dry bag, plug adapter.

Three looks by budget

Prices are approximate and in INR. All brands are on Myntra and Ajio. Choose breathable fabrics, and avoid heavy denim.

Temples and street food, tight budget

  • H&M or Peter England cotton shirt, about ₹1,000
  • Light cotton trousers, about ₹900
  • Slip-on sandals, about ₹600

Budget under 1,500 for the shirt and trousers

A sleeved cotton shirt and light long trousers work for temples and markets.

Bangkok day, mid range

  • Uniqlo or H&M linen-blend shirt, about ₹2,500
  • Zara or H&M chinos, about ₹2,500
  • Clean sneakers or leather sandals, about ₹2,500

Budget 1,500 to 4,000 for the shirt and chinos each

A neat shirt and chinos are cool, and pass for malls and temples.

Rooftop bar, upper range

  • Rare Rabbit or Zara dark shirt, about ₹3,500
  • Light chinos, about ₹2,500
  • Leather loafers, about ₹4,500

Budget 4,000 to 10,000 for the shirt and shoes

Rooftop bars in Bangkok ask for smart casual. Closed shoes and long trousers pass.

  • Buy a light pair of long trousers. You will need them at temples.
  • Pack slip-on shoes for temples and beaches.

Wear on the plane

Wear light trousers, a cotton tee, and sneakers. Carry a light layer for the cold cabin. Keep your swim shorts in your carry-on. Wear slip-on shoes for the airport security line. Keep your passport and your cash in a front pocket. Arrive in cotton and be ready to change in the airport washroom if you go straight to the temple.

Beach, city and night

On the beach, swim shorts and a thin shirt are enough, plus sandals that dry fast. In Bangkok, wear a cotton tee, light trousers or knee-length shorts, and sneakers, because the city is hot and walking is long. The BTS and the malls are cold, so carry a thin overshirt. For nightlife, wear a dark shirt, light chinos, and closed shoes. Clubs and rooftop bars may refuse flip-flops. For island hopping, wear swim shorts, a rash guard, and a cap, and carry a dry bag. Night markets are casual and crowded, so keep your wallet in a front pocket. Pack light, since you can buy cheap tees in Bangkok.

What to stop buying

Stop buying heavy jeans for Thailand. Stop buying expensive fisherman pants. Buy them in Bangkok for a few hundred rupees. Stop buying a new swimsuit for every day. Stop packing a blazer unless you plan a rooftop dinner. Buy two good shirts and rotate them.
