Bali packing guide for women

What to wear in Bali: temples, Ubud, beach clubs and sunset bars for women. Packing lists by trip length, sarong rules and looks at three budgets.

Updated 10 Oct 2026

Bali is soft, green and humid. You will walk through rice terraces, visit temples, swim and watch the sunset. Pack light, flowy and quick-dry. Bring one sarong. Here are looks, a modesty note for temples and packing lists for three, five and seven days.

Temple note

Bali temples ask you to cover your legs and your shoulders. Most sites lend or rent a sarong and a sash at the gate. Carry your own to save time. Wear a top with sleeves or a shawl. Do not enter a temple during your period, as this is a local custom. Be quiet and do not step over offerings on the ground. Remove shoes if asked.

  • Carry a sarong and a sash.
  • Cover shoulders. A light shirt over a tank works.
  • Do not touch offerings.
  • Photos near prayer areas: ask first.

Outfit formulas

Each with footwear and one accessory.

Ubud day

  • Cotton midi dress, about ₹1,400 (H&M, Fabindia or Myntra)
  • Light linen shirt as a cover, about ₹900
  • Footwear: comfortable sandals, about ₹800
  • Accessory: woven bag, about ₹500

Budget under ₹2,000

Cotton in a soft colour looks right among rice terraces.

Beach club day

  • Swimsuit with a printed sarong, about ₹2,200 (Zara or H&M)
  • Linen shirt as a cover, about ₹1,800 (Uniqlo)
  • Footwear: rubber slides, about ₹800
  • Accessory: a wide-brim hat, about ₹800

Budget ₹2,000 to ₹6,000

The sarong works as a skirt, scarf and towel.

Sunset bar

  • Satin slip dress or a printed wrap dress, about ₹3,500 (Mango, Zara or AND)
  • Light shawl, about ₹800
  • Footwear: flat sandals, about ₹1,200
  • Accessory: delicate gold necklace, about ₹700

Budget ₹2,000 to ₹6,000

Sunset is breezy, so a shawl is useful.

Villa dinner

  • Silk or linen maxi dress, about ₹7,000 (Mango, Zara or Marks & Spencer)
  • Wide belt, about ₹1,200
  • Footwear: leather sandals, about ₹2,500
  • Accessory: statement earrings, about ₹2,000 (Nykaa Fashion)

Budget ₹6,000 to ₹15,000

You look dressed without adding heat.

Packing list by trip length

Three days: two sundresses, one swimsuit, one linen shirt, one sarong, one dinner dress, sandals and slides. Five days: add one more dress, one pair of shorts and a cover-up. Seven days: add a second swimsuit, a light jacket for volcano treks and a pair of trainers. Bali sells beautiful cotton dresses at low prices. Leave some room.

  • Three days: six items.
  • Five days: nine items.
  • Seven days: eleven or twelve items.
  • Pack a dry bag for the boat and beach days.

Moving around the island

Bali is spread out. You will ride scooters, take cars and walk uneven paths. Plan for the way you move. If you ride a scooter, wear closed shoes and trousers, and carry a helmet. If you take a car, a dress is easy. If you walk the Campuhan ridge at dawn, wear sneakers and a light layer. In villages, wear a sarong over shorts. For a cooking class or a yoga class, pack a comfortable set. Bali has many yoga studios and they sell good leggings. Plan one outfit for every kind of day, and do not pack more than you need.

  • Wear closed shoes on a scooter.
  • Carry a small waterproof bag for rain.
  • Pack a pair of leggings for yoga or class days.
  • Keep a light layer for air-conditioned cafes.

On the plane

Wear loose trousers or leggings, a long tee and a cardigan. Compression socks help with long flights. You will land in warm, humid air, so keep a light layer on top that you can take off.

Climate note

April to October is dry and warm, with 27 to 31 degrees. November to March is wet and humid, with heavy afternoon rain. Pack quick-dry clothes and a rain jacket in the wet season. Volcano treks at dawn are cold. Pack a fleece.

Colour and silhouette

Bali style is relaxed and natural. White, cream, sage, rust and indigo look right. Flowy silhouettes handle humidity. A smocked waist, a wrap or a drawstring helps shape without tightness. Colour wise, choose a base and an accent. Warm skin tones suit rust, olive and cream. Cool skin tones suit sage, soft blue and lilac.

  • Pick quick-dry linen blends.
  • Choose a mix of two prints at most.
  • Keep jewellery light for the beach.
  • Pack a reef-safe sunscreen.

What to stop buying for Bali

Stop buying heavy denim. Stop buying heels for cobbled paths and scooter rides. Stop buying delicate silk that will not survive humidity. Stop buying white shorts for scooter days. Buy a pair of good sandals and quick-dry dresses.
