Indian wedding guest outfits for men

What to wear to each Indian wedding event as a guest: mehendi, haldi, sangeet, ceremony, reception. Three budgets, real brands.

Updated 10 Oct 2026

An Indian wedding has four or five events. You do not need five new outfits. You need two kurtas, one jacket, and one suit-style look, then you repeat with small changes. This guide gives the rule for each event. It also shows three budget bands with real brands. The goal is simple: look good in the photos and never upstage the groom.

The cardinal rules

Do not wear white to a Hindu ceremony. Do not wear head-to-toe black. Do not match the groom's colour. Ask the family if there is a theme. Dress up one level from what you think. Shoes matter: wear clean juttis, mojaris, or polished leather. Photos last longer than the party.

  • No all-white and no all-black.
  • Check the invite for a dress code or colour theme.
  • Wear shoes you can stand in for four hours.

Event by event

Mehendi is casual and often outdoors. Wear a cotton or linen kurta in a pastel. Haldi is yellow and messy. Wear an old kurta or a plain white one you will not miss. Sangeet is the dancing night. Wear a kurta with a Nehru jacket, or an Indo-western shirt and jacket, so you can move. The ceremony is the formal one. Wear a silk kurta or a bandhgala in a deep colour. The reception is the dressy one. Wear a suit, a bandhgala, or a sherwani if you are close family.

  • Mehendi: pastel linen kurta, juttis.
  • Haldi: an old white or yellow kurta.
  • Sangeet: kurta and printed Nehru jacket, or a bandhgala.
  • Ceremony: silk kurta, bandhgala, or sherwani.
  • Reception: dark suit or bandhgala.

Climate note

Wedding season runs from October to March, plus some summer dates. In North India, December and January nights are cold. Carry a shawl or a jacket for the outdoor ceremony. In April to June weddings, choose cotton and linen. Heavy silk in 40 degrees ruins photos. Check if the venue has AC before you choose fabric.

Three looks by budget

Here is what one good guest outfit costs at three levels. Prices are approximate. Manyavar and Fabindia are the safest festive shops for men.

Sangeet or mehendi, tight budget

  • Fabindia or Souled Store cotton kurta, about ₹1,200
  • Plain churidar or straight pyjama, about ₹500
  • Mojari or jutti, about ₹900

Budget under 1,500 for the kurta and pyjama

Simple fabric in a pastel works for any daytime event. Add a pocket square for a small lift.

Ceremony, mid range

  • Manyavar kurta set, about ₹3,500
  • Fabindia Nehru jacket, about ₹3,000
  • Leather mojaris, about ₹1,500

Budget 1,500 to 4,000 for the kurta and jacket each

Manyavar gets festive colours right. The jacket makes the kurta look finished.

Reception, upper range

  • Louis Philippe or Rare Rabbit suit or bandhgala, about ₹8,000
  • Plain shirt, about ₹1,800
  • Leather oxfords, about ₹4,000

Budget 4,000 to 10,000 for the main piece

A dark bandhgala or navy suit works for five receptions. Rent a sherwani if you only need one night.

  • Buy a good Nehru jacket first. It lifts three kurtas.
  • Rent a sherwani if you wear it once.

How to repeat clothes across events

You can wear the same pieces across three events and nobody will notice. Start with one neutral base: a plain cream or navy kurta. Add a printed Nehru jacket for the sangeet. Remove the jacket and add a stole for the ceremony. Swap the jutti for a leather mojari for the reception. Keep a second kurta in a deeper colour for the main night. This gives you two kurtas, one jacket, and one stole. It looks like four outfits. Check what the groom wears so your colours do not clash. Steam the clothes on the morning of each event. Pack a small kit with a safety pin, a lint roller, and deodorant. It saves you more than once.

What to stop buying

Stop buying a new full outfit for every event. Stop buying cheap shiny sherwanis you wear once. Stop buying shirts with a loud print for the sangeet. Spend on a good jacket and one good pair of shoes. Repeat them across events with a different kurta.

Grooming in one line

Get a haircut a week before, trim your beard, and use a light cologne, not a strong one.

Questions

What should a male guest wear to an Indian wedding?

A kurta with a Nehru jacket works at most events. For a formal reception, a suit or bandhgala. Match the dress to the time of day and the family.

Can men wear black to an Indian wedding?

Not for a Hindu ceremony. A black bandhgala works at an evening reception. Add a coloured pocket square or stole to lift it.

Can I wear a suit to a Sangeet?

Yes, if it is fitted and you can dance in it. A kurta with a jacket is easier to move in and photographs well.

Should I wear the same outfit to two events?

Yes. Change the shirt, jacket, or shoes. Nobody remembers a repeated bandhgala across two days.
