Navratri outfit ideas for men

Navratri and garba outfits for men: kedia, kurta, and modern options, nine-day colours, three budgets with real brands and prices.

Updated 10 Oct 2026

Navratri means nine nights of garba, a lot of dancing, and a lot of sweat. Your outfit has to move. The classic choice is a kedia with a dhoti or churidar. The modern choice is a short kurta with fitted pants or jeans. Pick cotton and comfortable shoes. This guide gives both options, three budget looks, and what to skip.

Traditional or modern

Traditional is a Gujarati kedia with a churidar or dhoti pants. Bright colours and mirror work are normal. Modern is a short cotton kurta with dark jeans or cotton pants. Add a bandhani stole or turban if you want the look. Both work at garba. Wear what you can dance in for four hours. If it restricts your arms, do not buy it.

  • Traditional: kedia, dhoti pants or churidar, juttis.
  • Modern: short cotton kurta, dark jeans, kolhapuris.
  • Add a bandhani stole or a turban for a festive finish.

Nine nights, nine colours

Many families follow a colour for each night. The colours change by year and region, so check the day-by-day list before you buy. You do not need nine outfits. Buy three kurtas in different colours and repeat them with a different stole. Orange, yellow, green, grey, red, and royal blue show up often. Keep one white kurta for the last night.

  • Buy three kurtas and rotate them.
  • Change the stole, not the whole outfit.

Climate note

Navratri falls in October, when most of the country is warm and humid. Garba grounds are crowded and hot. Choose cotton and cotton blends. Avoid heavy silk and thick embroidery. Carry a spare kurta if you dance every night. Wear a vest underneath so sweat does not show through.

Three looks by budget

Prices are approximate. Fabindia, Manyavar, and The Souled Store carry festive cotton. Local Gujarati markets give the best kedias.

Daily garba, tight budget

  • Fabindia or local cotton kurta, about ₹1,200
  • Cotton pyjama, about ₹500
  • Kolhapuri sandals, about ₹800

Budget under 1,500 for the kurta and pyjama

Cotton and loose. A kurta this cheap is fine because you will sweat in it.

Festival nights, mid range

  • Manyavar kurta in a bright colour, about ₹3,000
  • Dark stretch jeans, Jack & Jones, about ₹2,800
  • Bandhani stole, about ₹600

Budget 1,500 to 4,000 for the kurta and jeans each

A fitted short kurta with jeans moves well and photographs well.

Best-dressed night, upper range

  • Handcrafted kedia set, about ₹5,000 to ₹8,000
  • Mojari or leather jutti, about ₹2,000
  • Turban or stole

Budget 4,000 to 10,000 for the kedia set

Buy a proper kedia once. It also works at weddings.

  • Check the fabric tag. Cotton wins at garba.
  • Wear shoes you can take off, or bring a bag for them.

How to dress for four hours of dancing

Think like an athlete. Start with a cotton vest or a thin base layer that wicks sweat. Choose a kurta with room in the shoulders and under the arms. Pick pants with a bit of stretch, or a loose churidar that does not bind at the knee. Garba has quick turns and deep bends. A tight jean ends your night early. Wear socks that you do not mind losing if the ground is dusty, or go barefoot where allowed. Tie a bandana or stole around your neck to wipe sweat. Keep your phone and wallet in a small cross-body pouch, not in loose pockets. Drink water between rounds. Pack a second kurta if you plan to stay past midnight, and change before you head home.

What to stop buying

Stop buying stiff silk kurtas for garba. Stop buying heavy sherwanis you cannot dance in. Stop buying leather shoes for the grounds. They get stepped on and ruined. Buy a good cotton kurta and a pair of cheap kolhapuris.

Grooming in one line

Use a strong deodorant, keep a small towel, and wear light cologne so you smell fresh after nine nights.

Questions

What should men wear to garba?

A kedia with dhoti pants or a short cotton kurta with jeans. Pick cotton and comfortable shoes you can dance in.

What is a kedia?

A kedia is a short, flared Gujarati top with a circular hem, often with mirror work. Men wear it with a dhoti or churidar for garba.

Can men wear jeans for garba?

Yes. A short cotton kurta with dark stretch jeans is popular. Choose jeans that let you bend and move.

What footwear is best for garba?

Kolhapuris, flat sandals, or bare feet if the venue allows it. Avoid leather shoes because the ground is crowded.

How many outfits do I need for nine nights?

Three or four. Buy three kurtas in different colours and one spare. Wash and rotate them. Change the stole or the turban each night for variety. Many men wear the same kedia on two nights without anyone noticing.
