Ladakh packing guide for women

What to wear in Ladakh: layers, footwear and modesty notes for women. Packing lists by trip length, altitude tips and looks at three budgets.

Updated 10 Oct 2026

Ladakh is cold, dry and bright. The air is thin, the sun is fierce and the nights drop below freezing. You do not need glamour here. You need layers, good shoes and sun protection. Here are looks, a modesty note for villages and monasteries, and packing lists for five, seven and ten days.

Modesty note

Ladakh is a Buddhist and Muslim region, and people dress conservatively in villages and monasteries. Cover your shoulders and knees when you enter a monastery. Remove shoes and hats. Avoid very short shorts or tight outfits in towns such as Leh. Thermal layers with trousers and long jackets cover everything and keep you warm. Most visitors wear trekking clothes, so you will not stand out.

  • Cover shoulders and knees in monasteries.
  • Remove hats and shoes before entering a prayer hall.
  • Avoid outfits that expose the midriff in villages.
  • A scarf covers your head and neck from sun and dust.

Layering system

Layers beat one big jacket. Start with a thermal base layer. Add a fleece or wool mid layer. Finish with a wind-proof, insulated jacket. In the sun, you may take off two layers. At night, you will put them all on. Cotton holds moisture and makes you cold. Pick merino, polyester blends or fleece.

  • Base: thermal top and leggings.
  • Mid: fleece or wool sweater.
  • Outer: down jacket or insulated shell.
  • Extras: gloves, beanie, neck gaiter, thick socks.

Outfit formulas

Each with footwear and one accessory.

Town day, Leh

  • Thermal top and leggings, about ₹900 (Decathlon, Uniqlo Heattech)
  • Fleece jacket, about ₹1,200 (Decathlon or Vero Moda knit)
  • Footwear: sturdy sneakers with thick socks, about ₹1,800
  • Accessory: a woollen beanie, about ₹300

Budget under ₹2,000

Warm, covered and cheap.

Monastery and lake day

  • Wool-blend sweater, about ₹2,500 (Uniqlo or Marks & Spencer)
  • Water-resistant trekking trousers, about ₹2,500 (Decathlon or Wildcraft)
  • Footwear: waterproof trekking shoes, about ₹3,500
  • Accessory: UV sunglasses, about ₹1,200

Budget ₹2,000 to ₹6,000

Trousers and a sweater cover you at monasteries and keep you warm at lakes.

Evening stay

  • Fleece-lined joggers and a hoodie, about ₹2,000 (H&M or Uniqlo)
  • Down vest, about ₹3,000 (Uniqlo)
  • Footwear: insulated slippers, about ₹800
  • Accessory: a neck gaiter, about ₹400

Budget ₹2,000 to ₹6,000

Camps and homestays are cold at night.

Trek or Pangong overnight

  • Down jacket, about ₹7,000 (Wildcraft, Decathlon or Columbia)
  • Thermal base set, about ₹2,500
  • Footwear: insulated trekking boots, about ₹5,000
  • Accessory: insulated gloves, about ₹1,500

Budget ₹6,000 to ₹15,000

Pangong is minus degrees at night. A real down jacket is worth it.

Packing list by trip length

Five days: two thermal sets, two fleece or sweaters, one down jacket, two pairs of trekking trousers, five pairs of socks, one pair of boots, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm. Seven days: add another thermal set, an extra sweater and gloves. Ten days: add a spare pair of trousers, a rain shell and a second hat. Laundry is slow in the cold, so pack extras.

  • Five days: a medium duffel.
  • Seven days: a large duffel.
  • Ten days: a large duffel plus a daypack.
  • Pack medicine for altitude. Ask your doctor before you go.

On the plane

Wear your bulkiest layers. Put on trousers, a thermal, a fleece and your boots. Put the down jacket in the cabin bag or wear it. You land at 3,500 metres. It is cold and bright, so keep sunglasses handy.

Climate note

May to September is the main season. Days are 15 to 25 degrees and nights are 0 to 8. In October, nights fall below zero. Winter is minus 15 or lower, and most tourist camps close. Sun is strong at altitude, so wear sunscreen and sunglasses year round.

Colour and silhouette

Ladakh is stark and bright, so colour pops against rock and sky. Mustard, red, teal and magenta look striking in photos. Layered silhouettes are practical. Choose a fitted base and looser outer layers. A long jacket keeps your back warm. Pick colours near your face that suit you, such as a neck gaiter or beanie.

  • Bright jackets look great in photos.
  • Keep base layers in neutral colours so they mix.
  • Pick a colour for your beanie that suits your skin.
  • Buy locally woven shawls in Leh.

What to stop buying for Ladakh

Stop buying cotton thermals. Stop buying fashion sneakers with no grip. Stop buying one thick jacket instead of layers. Stop buying jeans, which stay cold and heavy. Skip makeup. Pack a heavy moisturiser and lip balm.
